FIRST TERM
FDD110 – CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION I
Goal: This is an introductory class to the construction of garments employing technical sewing skills as used by manufacturers in the fashion industry.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student will understand the: Operation of industrial sewing machines and serger through weekly swatches and projects; Proper use of terminology related to construction; Garment construction leading to the skirt and pant; Marker making for production.
FDD111 – PATTERN DRAFTING I
Goal: An introductory course with emphasis on precision pattern making for the lower body (skirt and pant), development of blocks, measuring techniques to record body and dress form measurements and basic design manipulations.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student will: Understand the fundamentals of pattern drafting; Identify and measure the areas of the body needed to draft a block; Create a basic pant and skirt block from a set of measurements; Manipulate the blocks into complete, finished stylized patterns that meet industry standard quality.
IA112 – INTRODUCTION TO FASHION
Goal: To comprehensively show the student the exciting world of fashion and its enormous potential in the job market now and in the future.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: (1) recognize how merchandising and design affects every facet of our lives and realize the complexities of the fashion business. (2) Have a working knowledge of the retail continuum. (3) Understand the varied possibilities of employment in the field of merchandising and design.
IA109 – TEXTILES 1
Goal: In this class the student will explore identification of fibre types, yarn types, fabric constructions, fabric weights and fabric finishes used in the fashion industry and appropriate uses of fabric in apparel.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Identify properties of natural and man-made fibers and relate this information to end product uses; Identify work of leading designers; Understand laws affecting textiles labeling and identify yarn types and uses; Analyze woven fabrics; Apply finished fabrics to end products
IA111 – COLOUR THEORY
Goal: This is an introductory design class focusing on the elements and principles of colour theory.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Use the principles of colour and design in assigned projects; Complete projects in colour mixing, chart development, problems of sensation, analysis ad relationship of colour.
IA131 – ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Goal: This is an introductory class covering the elements of design such as line, shape and texture.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to use the application of these elements in assigned projects following the given criteria.
IA250 – INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
Goal: To provide the student with the fundamental principles of information processing and knowledge of computer system applications in the work place.
Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Demonstrate an understanding of the basic operation of a microcomputer including the use of printing and scanning equipment; (2) Operate within the Windows XP environment; (3) Access and browse the Internet Explorer; (4) Send and receive e-mail message; (4) Create and edit documents using MS Word; (5) Prepare and graph a spreadsheet using MS Excel; (6) Develop and present a graphic presentation using MS PowerPoint.
SECOND TERM
FDD120 – CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION 2
Goal: This is a level 2-garment construction class employing technical sewing skills as used by manufacturers in the fashion industry.
Objective: Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate: Operation of industrial sewing machines through weekly swatches and projects; Proper use of terminology related to construction; Garment construction relating to the lined bodice and button down shirt; Marker making for production.
FDD121 – PATTERN DRAFTING 2
Goal: This is a level 2 drafting course with emphasis on the upper body, including sleeves, collars, and closures. Development of the basic upper body slopers, correct body measurements and design manipulations will be explored in detail.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Understand the fundamentals of pattern drafting; Develop blocks for bodice, sleeves and basic collars; Complete patterns for blouses and shirts that meet industry standards of quality; Identify and measure upper body area that is required to draft a torso block.
FDD122 – SKETCHING I
Goal: To learn basic drawing fundamentals and proportions of the fashion figure as well as technical sketches.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Illustrate in proportion the fashion figure; Demonstrate garment illustration; Execute accurate technical sketches; Create a unique and individual style.
FDD123 – DRAPING I
Goal: This is an introductory draping course that will cover basic fundamentals, which will include blocks and basis styles. The student will create their final garment applying skills learned throughout the term.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Produce a clean and precise initial drape and patterns that correspond to the initial drape; Produce patterns that are clean, precise and up to industry standard; Prepare a drape that translates correctly into the final garment; Produce a final garment that fits well.
FDD 124- INTRODUCTION TO FASHION 2
Goal: To introduce the student to design and fashion terminology. Develop an understanding of yarns, stitches and gauges of knitwear. Recognize relevant design silhouettes as they pertain to both woven and knits garments.
Objective: The student should be able to present a vocabulary of style names, including garment silhouettes and variations in design features. Examine the impact of design features on the performance of the garment. Have an understanding of the different knitwear yarns and stitches. Modify design features for a specific target market.
FDD 125 – DIGITAL DESIGN
Goal: This course will introduce the student to various digital drawing techniques needed for product and promotional creations.
Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Understand Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; (2) Learn use of digital colour procedures; (3) Develop digital designs for product and promotional needs; (4) Create digital drawings of fashion related goods; (5) Develop digital design concepts; (6) Understand digital file manipulation and management.
THIRD TERM
FDD111 – CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION 3
Goal: This is an advanced level of sewing focusing on modern methods of tailoring as it applies to the pantsuit.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to; Operate the industrial sewing/serging machine through weekly swatches; Construction of a tailored suit jacket meeting industry standard of quality; Construction of tailored open suit pant meeting industry standard of quality; Planning and time management of long term projects.
FDD131-PATTERN DRAFTING 3
Goal: This is an advanced apparel pattern drafting class. Emphasis is on block development and styled patterns relating to princess line dresses and women’s or men’s tailored jackets.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to produce blocks and patterns for jackets and dresses.
FDD132-SKETCHING 2
Goal: Fashion sketching 2 will guide the student through a detailed approach to illustration and technical drawing, allowing the student the freedom and creativity to develop their own style.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to demonstrate a professional standard of practice and output in illustration and technical drawing.
FDD133-DRAPING 2
Goal: This course is the 2 of 3 levels in draping. It will cover notch and shawl collars and bias draped cowls and dresses.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to demonstrate through the skills shown through the development of final garments.
IA300-FASHION HISTORY
Goal: The course will through lectures, survey the history of Western fashionable dress from the fourteenth century to the late seventeenth century. The course will also explore the development of fashion, as well as the impact of cultures, events and individuals on clothing.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student should: Define the many forces that influence the form a garment takes; Describe the main silhouettes, important details and vocabulary related to the periods of dress studied; Identify the cultural diversity of dress and associate the periods studied to modern fashion and design.
FDD134-KNITWEAR 1
Goal: This class concentrates on the development & design of knit garments through the cut and sews method.
Objectives: The successful student should be able to demonstrate skills learned through the development of completed knitwear garments.
FOURTH TERM
FDD240-COLLECTION 1
Goal: This is an advanced design class. Students will incorporate skills taught in fundamental design classes to create a graduate collection.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Design a complete and original collection for 1 season; Present original designs for critique in a professional presentation; Solve specific problems oriented to design situations; Design a grouping centered on any inspiration or restriction; Anticipate and identify trends and translate them into their own collection.
FDD241-STUDIO PRACTICES
Goal: This is a pattern development and construction class that prepares the students to work in a manufacturing workroom. Focus is on procedure if manufacturing 3 original garments from sketch to final product utilizing drafting and sewing skills previously covered.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Plan and manage long term projects; Produce patterns that are complete and of industry production quality; Produce muslin fittings and fit corrections; Production of marker making that is both cost effective and shows correct grain line placement; Prepare final garments that are store ready.
FDD243 – DRAPING 3
Goal: This is an advanced level of draping. This draping course will move through a series of advanced subjects, challenging each student during the execution of each garment. The student will also be encouraged to push boundaries creatively.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Produce a clean and precise initial drape and patterns that meet the industry standard of quality; Produce patterns that correspond to the initial drape; Produce drapes that translate correctly into final garments: Produce final garments that are fully finished and store ready and fulfill all the assignment requirements.
FD244-KNITWEAR 2
Goal: This second level of knitwear will further explore the design and development of the cut and sew method of knitwear.
Objectives: The successful student should be able to complete garments at a professional level utilizing the methods shown for the development of cut and sew knitwear.
IA400- CONTEMPORARY FASHION
Goal: This course will demonstrate the role of fashion and fashion designers in society throughout the twenty and twenty first centuries.
Objectives: The successful student should be able to fully comprehend the evolution of contemporary fashion in context to society in the same period.
FIFTH TERM
FDD250-COLLECTION 2
Goal: This is an advanced drafting sewing class where students will utilize skills taught in the past 5 terms to create the original graduate collections designed in collection 1 design class. Students will have the opportunity to develop their collections using the instructor as a consultant and mentor throughout the process.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Plan and strategize weekly progress through charts; Master professional pattern drafting and construction skills with a focus on fit and production; Fitting on live model and appropriate pattern corrections; Demonstrate proper production cutting and bundling techniques; Produce garments using manufacturing techniques; Manage time for long term projects.
FDD251 – GERBER I
Goal: This is an introductory class to the gerber pattern drafting system. The student will be walked through the basic operation of the system and apply basic pattern drafting skills learned in terms 1 and 2.
Objective: Upon completion of this course, the successful student will demonstrate through weekly assignments and final exam the following: Perform any of he functions available in pds 2000; Create a user environment; Create a storage area; Create a notch parameter table; Draft a skirt block; Make basic pattern manipulations.
FDD252-PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
Goal: This course will further develop the student’s skills in the area of communication and development of offshore production through the detailed instruction in the development and completion of tech packs
Objective: The successful student should be able to fully develop complete tech packs for offshore manufacturing purposes.
FDD253 – PATTERN GRADING
Goal: The student will learn to increase and decrease proportionately a variety of sample size patterns to achieve full size ranges.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Understand the mechanics of grading techniques learned for basic blocks both manually and by machine; Apply grading techniques learned for basic blocks to more complicated styles as a result of fashion trends; Understand different figure types; Create size ranges according to chosen market.
SIXTH TERM
FDD260-COLLECTION 3
Goal: In this class the student will continue development of their collection. Outerwear, specialty fabrics and individual developmental problems will be covered. Students are encouraged to expand their skills and experiment new skills normally not considered for production designed clothing.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to analyze a collection for problems and complete all corrections. The successful student should also be able to develop specialty pieces to highlight a collection for production.
FDD261-PORTFOLIO PRESENTATION
Goal: The student will create a portfolio showcasing body of work created/learned over the six terms. The student will explore the practical applications of theories learned through a variety of two-dimensional assignments, followed by in-class instructor/student critiques.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Utilize a practical (tangible) application of putting together a body of work that; Be exposed to a critical awareness towards design aesthetic; Develop a portfolio of quality work in preparation for an interview; Demonstrate planning and time management skills to complete long term projects.
FDD262 – GERBER 2
Goal: This is an advanced CAD class expanding on the functions taught in Gerber I. During the second half of the term the student will navigate through system management, grading and marker making.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: Draft various blocks through computer aided design; Draft various styles through computer aided design; The student will be expected to think independently; Through the evaluation of the designer’s sketch, they will draft a garment efficiently, considering cost saving measures through the use of fabric and construction; Set up various tables and editors in system management; Grade through computer aided design; Create markers through computer aided design.
FDD263-DESIGNER DEVELOPMENT
Goal: The student will explore the job market through resume preparation, job search, interview techniques and career planning. The student will gain an understanding of becoming an entrepreneur through exposure to business structures and marketing initiatives.
Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to: Prepare a professional resume, write effective cover letters, conduct on-line job searches, develop and expand networking opportunities. Understand the role and responsibilities of an entrepreneur. Develop marketing materials for promotion of their designs/business.
FDD264-DESIGN IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY
Goal: The student will explore the role of fashion in a global economy through the introduction of global sourcing.
Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should understand the importance of sourcing textiles and off shore production. Understand risks as it pertains to the Global Marketplace. Understand the importance that duties and quotas play in sourcing decisions.
FDD265-MERCHANDISING PRACTICES
Goal: The student will be taught how to review their line from a merchandising perspective with industry critiques.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to evaluate their line from a price, fabric, cost and design perspective. Analyze the merchandise mix and the varying product and price categories of an apparel assortment. Understand line positioning and the initial stages of building a brand.
