    FIRST TERM

    IA112 - INTRODUCTION TO FASHION MERCHANDISING

    Goal: To comprehensively show the student the exciting world of fashion and its enormous potential in the job market now and in the future.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: (1) recognize how merchandising affects every facet of our lives and realize the complexities of the fashion business. (2) Have a working knowledge of the retail continuum. (3) Understand the varied possibilities of employment in the field of merchandising and will be well versed to start on the path of their choice.

    FMM111 - PROFESSIONAL SELLING

    Goal: The student will develop a personal sales philosophy and practice and improve skills essential to successful professional sales and acquire knowledge that is necessary to showroom management.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should: understand and be able to use the following strategies for professional selling: (1) Philosophy of personal selling; (2) Relationship strategies; (3) Product strategies (4) Customer strategies; (5) Presentation strategies.

    FMM112 - MERCHANDISING CALCULATIONS I

    Goal: The student will be introduced to the basic mathematics required to plan and understand the sales and profit performances of a retail business.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) understand the basic principles of retail merchandising mathematics to make a profit; (2) know how to calculate and budget sales, mark-ups, mark-downs and gross profit, and measures of inventory productivity (3) understand merchandising terms. (4) Understand concepts of profitability and factors influencing them. (5) Develop fluency in basic retail math calculations, and an awareness of the logic that lies behind and influences them.

    FMM113 - PRESENTATION TECHNIQUES

    Goal: Students will become more proficient and more comfortable in the art of public speaking. They will be able to confidently demonstrate their knowledge of communication theory, and will develop a facility for interpersonal exchange in a group setting.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) Understand the principles of effective communication; (2) Speak with clarity, authority and confidence before an audience; (3) Gain strength in preparing and presenting an effective speech.(4) Understand the methods required for an effective opening and closing of each speech.

    IA111 - COLOUR THEORY

    Goal: The student will develop an understanding of the elements and principles of colour.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to: appreciate the contributions of Itten, Munsell and others; develop knowledge of colour relationships and their effects; understand theoretical and psychological principles of colour and design; comprehend the correlation of colours; develop an understanding of the psychology of colour.

    IA109 - TEXTILES

    Goal: Students will research the different technical properties of a variety of textiles and learn about their applications in fashion garments past, present and future.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) identify properties of natural and manmade fibres for end product uses; (2) sample and analyze textile behaviour under a variety of sewing, washing and general: wear and tear conditions.

    IA250 - INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS

    Goal: To provide the student with the fundamental principles of information processing and a knowledge of computer system applications in the work place.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Demonstrate an understanding of the basic operation of a microcomputer including the use of printing and scanning equipment. (2) Operate within the Windows XP environment. (3) Access and browse the Internet Explorer; (4) Send and receive e-mail message; (4) Create and edit documents using MS Word; (5) Prepare and graph a spreadsheet using MS Excel; (6) Develop and present a graphic presentation using MS PowerPoint.

    SECOND TERM

    FMM121 - VISUAL MERCHANDISING

    Goal: The student will create a visual display to show fashion lines in windows, on mannequins, or in departmental settings to induce purchase.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) understand visual impact of displays; (2) apply lighting techniques; (3) use three dimensional display; (4) develop displays in order to influence purchases; (5) create a fashion display.

    FMM122 - FASHION TERMINOLOGY

    Goal: To introduce the student to fashion terminology, design trends & seasonal cycles while integrating the fashion and business world.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to (1) Present a vocabulary of style names, including garment silhouettes and variations in design features. (2) Examine the impact of design features on the performance of the garment. (3) Modify design features for a specific target market. (4) Analyze the merchandise mix & price points of a designer.

    FMM124 - TODAY’S INDUSTRY I

    Goal: To give the student the opportunity to research and discuss related industries within the fashion environment by understanding the importance of emerging trends.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) Understanding the significance of cultural trends, (2) Recognize emerging trend, (3) Appreciate the importance of trends & their impact on a variety of fashion related industries.

    FMM125 - MERCHANDISING CALCULATIONS II

    Goal: This course is a continuation of FMM105. The student will be introduced to the concept of buying, valuating inventory, dollar planning and control.
    Objective: Upon successful completion the student should be able to: (1) evaluate the advantages and limitations of the retail method of inventory; (2) identify causes of overages and shortages; (3) describe the elements of the six-month merchandise; plan and calculate average inventory, stock turnover and GMROI; (4) identify and understand key shipping, dating and discount terms.

    FMM126 - FASHION COMMUNICATIONS

    Goal: This course covers the basics of magazine, writing and interviewing. Topics include: focusing story ideas, combining research techniques with strong visual reporting, interview techniques, and structuring and writing articles.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able: (1) Demonstrate the role of journalism and communications (2) Conduct a professional journalistic interview (3) Research subjects thoroughly and quickly (4) Write memorable and compelling stories (5) Write with clarity and style.

    FMM127 - DIGITAL DESIGN I

    Goal: This course will introduce the student to various digital drawing techniques needed for product and promotional creations.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to understand Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, learn use of digital colour procedures, develop digital designs for product and promotional needs, create digital drawings of fashion merchandising related goods, develop digital design concepts, understand digital file manipulation and management.

    FMM128 - INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY

    Goal: This course will introduce the student to basic psychological principles that are applicable to personal development and professional life in merchandising.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) Have an overview of the theory and history of contemporary psychology.(2) Be able to apply psychological theory in personal life, for greater self-understanding and personal development. (3) Be able to relate psychological theory to professional life.

    THIRD TERM

    FMM130 - PRIVATE LINE DEVELOPMENT

    Goal: The student will have an understanding of the role of the Fashion Buyer as it pertains to the planning and controlling of budgets and the merchandising of goods. The student will learn the dynamics of running and developing a profitable Private Label Department.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) understand the responsibilities & skills required of a buyer; (2) understand the steps taken in planning and executing a profitable department; (3) be familiar with key buying strategies; (4) Develop a Private Label Program.

    FMM131 - MARKETING I

    Goal: The student will develop an overall understanding of the marketing process and be able to relate marketing activities and principles to business operations and to society as a whole.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Define marketing and the role it plays in building customer relationships. (2) Examine the responsibility of marketing in strategic planning. (3) Describe the environmental forces that affect the company. (4) Analyze the Canadian consumer market and the major factors that influence consumer buyer behaviour. (5) Identify the techniques companies use to gather information and how that information is used to make critical marketing decisions. (6) Discuss the processes involved in market segmentation, target marketing and market positioning

    FMM132 - INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS

    Goal: Students will learn how various business structures operate in a free-market society, gain insight into negotiating skills through role playing and learn common business terminology.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should have: (1) A basic understanding of the Canadian business environment today including government relations.(2) A knowledge of the management process and what managers do including planning, organizing, motivating, and leading. (3) An understanding and basic skills in team negotiation.

    FMM133 - MAGAZINE DESIGN & EDITORIAL

    Goal: This course is a practical step-by-step Introduction to magazines. It focuses on the anatomy and purpose of the magazine. Topics include: planning the content of a magazine, developing strong story ideas, the importance of covers, budgets and advertising. Students prove their skills when they produce their own magazine.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to: (1) Demonstrate an understanding of the significant role magazines play in the establishment of fashion trends and the fashion industry as a whole. (2) Plan the content of a magazine. (3) Describe the world of business to business (trade) publishing. (4) Produce a professional quality publication.

    FMM134 - PAGE LAYOUT

    Goal: This course is a practical step-by-step guide to the construction of a magazine. Topics include: Creating and formatting a document, developing strong layout, creating spreads, a magazine cover, contents page, and mast head. By the end of the course a magazine will be produced.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Demonstrate an understanding of In Design; (2) Know how to execute a newsletter, ad, or a publication; (3) Know what is needed for the production and printing process; (4) Plan the content of a magazine; (5) Produce a professional quality magazine.

    FMM135 - TODAY’S INDUSTRY II

    Goal: The student will gain increased awareness of the many opportunities in the Canadian and Global Marketplace. Industries that might be explored Home Furnishings, Cosmetics, Promotional Marketing and Accessories.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to: (1) Understand the relationships between Fashion & various industries. (2) Discover other Business Opportunities and how to realize their potential; (3) Identify current opportunities in both the Domestic and International Market.

    FMM136 - INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY

    Goal: This course introduces students to the theories, history and development of photography. Students will study photographic terminology, techniques, equipment, processes, innovations, and movements.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to; (1) understand basic terminology, principles, and techniques of photography; (2) Demonstrate the use of cameras to take photographs, experiment with basic camera operation and controls; (3) examine technical processes involved in the making of photographs; (4) discuss aesthetic theories and philosophies concerning photography as an art form, a documentary process, and a technical tool, and examine how historical and contemporary photographers have worked to either promote or refute these theories; (5) complete a variety of photographic projects that show proficiency in basic camera use and image reproduction; (6) review, discuss, and critique photographic work during classroom presentations.

    FOURTH TERM

    FMM242 - FASHION BUYING

    Goal: To prepare students to be able to function analytically within the role of a retail buyer.
    Objective: Upon successful ompletion the student should be able to: (1) Develop strategies (2) Analyze a business (3) Create a competent six month merchandising plan (4) Complete a classification plan for the season. (5) Create an open to buy from the buyers perspective.

    FMM243 - MARKETING II

    Goal: The student will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the marketing process through in-depth analysis of selected marketing processes and procedures.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Demonstrate the importance of Marketing Research and Information system. (2) Show companies may adapt their marketing mixes for International markets. (3) Analyze the roles of product and service branding, packaging, labelling and product support services marketing considerations that services require. (4) Explain the New Product process and how marketing strategy changes over the product life cycle. (5) Discuss the factors affecting price decisions, including the impact of consumers perceptions of price and value. (6) Assess distribution options & integrated logistics and the benefits to the company. (7) Discuss he roles of wholesalers and retailers and the marketing decisions they face

    FMM245 - FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

    Goal: In this course students are introduced to basic fashion photography techniques. Topics include selecting and posing models, scouting locations, selecting props, lighting fabrics and people, developing stylistic themes, and using color and compositional elements.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to: (1) discuss terminology, principles and techniques of fashion photography; (2) learn to select and pose models, scout locations and select props for photographic projects; (3) practice lighting fabrics and people using a variety of indoor and outdoor lighting systems, color schemes, fills, and related equipment; (4) develop compositional ability and stylistic themes by experimenting with fabrics, props, backdrops and locations in fashion shoots; (5) critique and revise work during classroom presentations.

    FMM246 - CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR

    Goal: This course will introduce students to basic concepts of consumer behaviour, including both theory and measured behaviour, and to the principles of Market Research.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to (1) Develop an effective consumer survey (2) Evaluate the success of marketing efforts (3) Predict the outcome of proposed marketing efforts (4) Understand the principles of consumer behaviour (5) Prepare clear, professional reports (6) Make strong, well-prepared presentations (7)Understand the principles of market research.

    FMM247 - BUSINESS LAW

    Goal: The student will be introduced to and become aware of the nature and importance of law as it concerns various business establishments.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) To identify the laws that impact both individual and business concerns; (2) Be aware of what are the acceptable standards regarding business agreements (3)Apply legal concepts to problems and an understanding of the options available to them (4) Develop awareness of when there is a need to consult a lawyer.

    IA300 - FASHION HISTORY

    Goal: The course will through lectures, survey the history of Western fashionable dress from the fourteenth century to the late seventeenth century. The course will also explore the development of fashion, as well as the impact of cultures, events and individuals on clothing.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should: Define the many forces that influence the form a garment takes; Describe the main silhouettes, important details and vocabulary related to the periods of dress studied; Identify the cultural diversity of dress and associate the periods studied to modern fashion and design.

    FIFTH TERM

    FMM250 - MARKETING III

    Goal: The student will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of the marketing process through in-depth analysis of selected marketing processes and procedures.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Identify the tools of the marketing communication mix and discuss the importance of an integrated approach to marketing communication. (2) Describe the steps used to develop, execute, and evaluate a successful advertising, sales promotion and public relations campaign. (3) Explain the role of personal selling and sales management in marketing. (4) Discuss the responsibility of organizational markets and buyers. (5) Develop a marketing strategy for an existing product or service. (6) Evaluate marketing’s role and ethical responsibility, and its impact on individuals, businesses and society. (7) Analyse the effectiveness of direct marketing.

    FMM251 - FASHION PUBLICITY & PROMOTION

    Goal: To introduce the student to the key elements of Public Relations. Students will explore the functions of a professional public relations practitioner in such areas of PR as: Image Building, Integrated Communications Media Relations, Publicists, and more. Particular emphasis will be placed on research and planning, campaign development, effective writing and networking skills.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to :(1) Develop skills utilized in planning and implementing Publicity and Promotion of products at different market levels of the fashion industry (2) Utilize methods for analyzing and evaluating publicity (3) Promotion as a function of marketing and merchandising (4) Prepare a media kit for distribution

    FMM252 - FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

    Goal: This course is aimed at students with no previous financial knowledge and has the goal of helping them develop basic financial skills and understanding.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should be able to: (1) Apply financial knowledge to financial problems (2) Evaluate and analyze financial statements. (3) Develop fundamental skills for financial control and planning.

    FMM253 - ENTREPRENEURSHIP

    Goal: The Students will be able to understand the various laws and methods needed to establish an independent business in Canada.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Understand the various types of Business ownership. (2) Understand critical business terminology. (3)Appreciate advantages/disadvantages of owning your own business (4) Understand special regulatory acts (5 ) Prepare a business plan (6) Understand the basics of taxation and insurance.

    FMM254 - TODAY’S INDUSTRY III

    Goal: Students will be introduced to the diversity of occupations and businesses within the fashion industry by emphasizing the importance of networking and internship opportunities. This course will also assist in portfolio development.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course he student should: (1) Have a better understanding of the importance of internships (2) Where to source internships (3) How to make them a valuable tool (4) Start to build a Portfolio (5) Prepare a resume.

    FMM255 - DIGITAL DESIGN II

    Goal: This course will elevate the knowledge of the student concerning various digital techniques using Photoshop and Illustrator for promotional needs.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should demonstrate skills to design, create and apply: (1) Photoshop photographic techniques; (2) Digital design concepts; (3) Photographic concepts; (4) Use of digital file manipulation and management.

    IA400 - CONTEMPORARY FASHION

    Goal: This course will demonstrate the role of fashion and fashion designers in society throughout the twenty and twenty first centuries
    Objective: The successful student should be able to fully comprehend the evolution of contemporary fashion in context to society in the same period.

    SIXTH TERM

    FMM260 - BUSINESS IN A GLOBAL ECONOMY

    Goal: The student will develop an overall understanding of global sourcing and its importance in today’s marketplace.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of the course the student should be able to: (1) Understand what doing business in the global economy entails (2) Understand the impact of the global economy on today’s consumer (3) Understand the impact of the global economy on the retailing business (4) Become familiar with terms used in global sourcing (5) Understand the risks in global sourcing (6) Become familiar with the buyer’s role in global sourcing.

    FMM261 - ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOUR

    Goal: The students will further develop their understanding of the role of management within the organization to effectively achieve corporate objectives.
    Objective: Upon successful completion the student should be able to: (1) Analyze the various elements of organizational structure and design. (2) Evaluate the importance of efficient communication in organizations. (3) Examine the role of H. R. in achieving company objective. (4) Identify the characteristics of effective leadership. (5) Discuss techniques for motivating employees. (6) Critique the role of teams and groups in reaching company goals. ((7) Assess the impact of conflict, change and stress on individuals and organizations.

    FMM262 - CAPSTONE PROJECT

    Goal: This workshop environment allows for the further development of skills required to complete an industry based project and presentation to the client.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course the student should: (1) Understand the purpose of and effectively meet all deadlines and project requirements; (2) Be an active participant contributing effectively to the assigned tasks and the process of group work within in-class and/or workshop exercises for evaluation; (3) Demonstrate and practice the terminology used in the fashion business to communicate an effective industry presentation; (4) Understand how to formulate, organize and deliver professional,business presentations.

    FMM263 - WEB PAGE DESIGN

    Goal: Students will be introduced to the World Wide Web, the history, present and future. They will learn simple techniques that will allow them to build not only simple websites but get a firm grasp on how the system works. This will allow them to relate to web developers and designers in future work relationships.
    Objective: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to: (1) Build a simple website in xhtml; (2) Understand the relationship between the World Wide Web and the Internet; (3) Use simple CSS to format text; (4) Publish and service a simple website

    FMM264 - SPECIAL EVENTS

    Goal: The students will be exposed to all facets of the event planning industry and its potential for future employment.
    Objective: Upon successful completion the student should be able to: (1) Define the different types of Events, their needs and how to fulfill them (2) Execute an Event Proposal and all the component parts (3) Understand the legal and financial management (4) Develop the advertising & sales promotion

    FMM265 - BUSINESS & SOCIAL MEDIA

    Goal: This course will focus on various forms of on-line communications, with a concentration on the dynamic and evolving world of social media.
