New University to Offer Accessible Online Program
Established in June 2003, Yorkville University, based in Fredericton, New Brunswick, was granted University designation and in April 2004 was approved to offer a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology by the New Brunswick Department of Education.
The MA in Counselling Psychology degree, which is offered through an online/blended format, is unique to Yorkville University. Students from across the country, and from around the world, are brought together through an online campus to share experiences and work together in an online classroom.
Offering course work online allows Yorkville University to provide accessible education to individuals who might otherwise be unable to attend traditional Universities.
Yorkville University has adopted a “one at a time” course delivery method to further promote student’s ability to be successful in the program while maintaining outside commitments.
Upon finishing 15 months of course work, students enter a practicum within their home communities to apply their newly learned counseling skills. After successful completion, students graduate from Yorkville University with a 48 credit hour MA degree including 300 hours of supervised counselling experience.
When questioned on the future of the cutting edge method of delivery for the program, Dr. John McLaughlin, Dean of Behavioural Sciences stated that “current research suggests that online delivery is just as effective and possibly more effective than more traditional methods of teaching. We are excited for the continued prospects of online learning and hope to add additional programs in the future.”
