    Writing for Film and TV

    The Toronto Film School’s Writing for Film & TV diploma program is geared towards aspiring writers who want to develop professional writing skills for film, TV and new media. Graduates of this course have the opportunity to gain employment in a variety of fields, including: story editors, production executives, network executives and screenwriters.

    In 18-months, students will learn to write scripts for: documentaries, broadcast news, factual entertainment shows, sitcoms, 1-hour features, TV movies and interactive webshows. This program teaches students how to write for different aspects of media such as drama, comedy and feature-length films. Students also learn the creative, technological and psychological aspects of writing for film and TV. Each term will have a writing workshop for students to critique each other’s work and further strengthen their writing style. Students will learn how to work independently and within a team. In the last term, students will gain practical experience within a simulated writing room to fully experience working environments. Students will work closely with other disciplines to learn the whole process from casting, developing the script, casting, pre-production, production and lastly, editing.

    Learning new media is vital for any filmmaker wishing to be competitive in the filmmaking industry and is an important component of the program. Students will develop expertise in writing for 3-D, shooting with DSLR, and become well-versed in creating online video projects with interactive and multimedia components.

    Upon completion of the course, graduates will have a portfolio of written work for Film and TV, have legal knowledge pertaining to screenwriting, understand the business of screenwriting and learn how to market themselves. Students will not only leave this program with skills as a screenwriter but also with a depth of knowledge in film, TV and new media production that will help them launch an exciting career.
